THE DRAGON'S FLIGHT
For those that don't know the soundscapes that
dream into dust create give them a brief history and rundown of current members and what they perform.
dream into dust is built around my concepts. when i need to add certain elements i'm not capable of, other people are involved. bryin dall usually contributes his unique avant-garde guitar distortions, and sometimes samples. patrick hogan has created bizarre microphone and guitar feedback effects. eddy malave plays viola. in the future more people will be involved, depending on the piece. so far we've completed the
no man's land MCD,
a prison for oneself, and The world we have lost CD.
What is
dream into dust currently involed in Musicallly or privately?
basically we're contributing to a series of interesting compilations. having a predetermined concept and deadline to work with helps pull something out of you musically. 'presumed guilty' (MISANTHROPY), 'what is eternal' (MIDDLE PILLAR), 'the cold the silent'
(dragon flight), to be followed by a tarot card CD
(palace of worms), and a special one on
chthonic streams. there are some others planned but they're very far in the future.
In your words how would describe
dream into dust to someone that has never heard you before?
a union of elements found in industrial, doom, gothic, experimental and dark folk that combine to create something other than those sources of inspiration.
How does
dream into dust go about writing such Dark, Depressive music are the music or vocal idea written 1st?
if there's a strong concept or intent, such as with tributes or special compilation tracks, lyrics are often written first with a vague idea of instrumentation. other times the song arises from a loop, or is written in a flash of inspiration followed by hours of time spent on the acoustic guitar. sometimes several samples are grouped together to use as a palette to create the basis for a track. it varies depending on what i'm in the mood to do.
You run your own label
chthonic streams Right? Tell us a bit about that.
the label came about because at the time of our first MCD, misanthropy wanted us but was too busy witht their imminent releases. in addition i wanted to maintain an information center and mailorder for things related to the band and other projects.
Whats your view on the current Ambient/Darkwave music scene? any postive or negative thoughts about it?
i suppose those are two different "scenes" in a sense. ambient can mean anything from
the orb to
lustmord and
lull, i like a lot of that. "darkwave" is a pretty vague term that these days is used mostly to describe a certain strain of 90's Gothic music. There are a few bands of that style that are good, such as
lycia, some consider us as part of that. in a way it is all the same but most people police their musical boundaries with religious fervor.
Are you currently happy with all that elfenblut does for you. I understand they are closing down. Are there any other labels out there going to pick your next release up?
a few are interested in working with us, but that's in the future. elfenblut are still handling
the world we have lost and they're great. it's a shame it's closing down but such is life.
Do any members in
dream into dust currently have side projects you would like to speak of.
sorry, i just fell off my chair laughing. where do i begin? patrick was in the goth bands figurehead and
bitter grace. eddy plays viola in the
arethusa string quartet as well as numerous other classical solo/ensemble engagements. bryin's been in
loretta's doll for years, and i joined them on bass and other noises for their
sixth album. i also sometimes mix for them as well as bryin's project 4th sign of the apocalypse, and a new death/noise project he does called ursus noir. bryin and
genesis p-orridge of
psychic tv and
throbbing gristle do spoken word/guitar as thee majesty. i have a project with bryin called
of unknown origin, which is more collaborative than our roles in each other's projects. we also recorded a darkambient album as
a murder of angelsmiddle pillar. after that will be a very dark country music album with bryin's vocals and my acoustic guitar. these are just ways to work with others and explore some realms that wouldn't quite work with
dream into dust, although that's my main concern.
I've recently gotten into Neoclassical and Dark Ambient music. I hear alot of same feelings in bands that are on
Cold meat Industry/
Eibon with you. Do you agree at all?
we all like the artists on those labels. there are correspondences, but i think we add certain elements in structure and a more 'hybrid' sound than they do. not better, just slightly different.
